How Crypto Wallets Work

What is a Crypto Wallet?

A crypto wallet is a tool that allows you to store, send, and receive digital currencies. Despite the name, it doesn't actually "store" your crypto β€” your assets live on the blockchain. Instead, a wallet stores your private keys, which prove ownership of your funds and allow you to authorize transactions.

Hot Wallets vs. Cold Wallets

Hot wallets are connected to the internet and include mobile apps, browser extensions, and desktop applications. They're convenient for everyday transactions but are more vulnerable to hacking. Examples include MetaMask, Trust Wallet, and Phantom.

Cold wallets (also called hardware wallets) store your private keys offline on a physical device. They're considered the gold standard for long-term storage. Popular options include Ledger and Trezor.

Custodial vs. Non-Custodial

Custodial wallets are managed by a third party (like an exchange). The platform holds your private keys on your behalf. This is convenient but means you're trusting someone else with your assets.

Non-custodial wallets give you full control of your private keys. You are solely responsible for securing them. The crypto community often says: "Not your keys, not your coins."

How to Choose the Right Wallet

  • For beginners: Start with a custodial wallet on a regulated platform like ON3X for ease of use and built-in security.
  • For active traders: A hot wallet connected to DeFi protocols provides quick access to swap and stake tokens.
  • For long-term holders: A hardware wallet keeps your assets secure offline, protected from online threats.

Best Practices

Always back up your seed phrase (recovery words) and store it in a secure, offline location. Never share your private keys or seed phrase with anyone. Use a combination of hot and cold wallets based on how frequently you need to access your funds.
